CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Matthew

"How about this one?" Sophie held up a tight, and incredibly short, leather dress. Sonia shook her head furiously, so the young Miss North threw the garment onto the ever-growing pile of discarded clothes. Grayson, standing in the corner and supported by the door frame, groaned and went back to texting on his phone. Matthew had been sitting in the same comfortable armchair for an hour now. He, Sophie, and Grayson were dressed and ready to go, but Sonia was still in a dressing gown.

"Grayson, Sophie, can you give us a minute please? What's wrong with the dresses?"

"Nothing."

“You know what happens when you lie."

"I didn't. I didn't lie."

"Sonia."

"I didn't lie, I promise you. There is nothing wrong with the dresses. They’re perfect for Sophie but there just not me."

"Wait here." He strode out of the room and called for James. His boss appeared from his study where he was working late after spending the day helping with the move. James had decided that last night had been enough at the club.

"What's wrong?"

"I need a favour. It's a big one. Please say no if you don't feel up to it."

"I don't want to go to the club."

"No, it isn't that." Matthew ran his hand nervously through his hair.

"What is it?"

"The clothes you had me buy Amy--I remember a bright red corset and matching leather leggings."

James swallowed.

"I'm sorry. Forget it. I'll sort something else." He turned to go back to where Sonia was.

"Matthew. Take them."

"I can't."

"Red isn't Amy's colour, anyway. I don't know why I suggested it. Red suits Sonia much better."

"Amy will return. You two-- you're meant for each other. I'll go check on her, talk to her. Or I could send Sonia."

"No. I know you know where she is, but I don't want to know. When she's ready. When we're both ready. It will happen." Matthew thought he could see tears forming in his boss's eyes. "Anyway. Enough of the girly stuff. Go get the clothes and dress up your woman. Have a great night and try not to think of me slaving away at work."

"Yeah, don't worry. I won't think of you at all." He fired back.

After collecting the clothes, he took them back to Sonia. "Are these better?"

"I love you. They’re perfect. They’re me. I know I’ll get naked in the club, and I can handle that, but when I'm just there, I need to hide my scars. They are a part of me and what makes me beautiful. I know that so I don't need a flogging to remind me, but I don't know. I just feel more comfortable in trousers than dresses or skirts."

"Get dressed. I'll send Sophie back in. Grayson and I need to plan."

"That sounds worrying." She picked up the leather leggings and put one foot in the hole.

"No, that sounds promising." He turned to leave.

"Matthew?"

"Yes?"

"I'm going to like living with you. Having someone."

He smiled, he was going to like it also. It had been a long time since he had someone like that.
